Krásna Hôrka Castle and the Andrássy Mausoleum

The castle above Krásnohorské Podhradie is the best known landmark in the whole Gemer region and you can see it from the road as you drive out of Rožňava. After the fire in 2012 it is still being restored and it remains closed to the public. The reopening date has been pushed back several times; the latest estimates put the first visitors at around 2030.

We say this up front on purpose — we feel for guests who make the trip and only find out at the gate.

What you can visit today

The Andrássy Mausoleum stands in the village itself, an Art Nouveau building from the turn of the 20th century that Count Dionýz Andrássy had built for his wife Františka. Inside there is a marble sarcophagus and gold mosaics — unusually impressive for such a small building. The mausoleum is open and is run by the Betliar Museum.

The castle itself can be walked around on the road below the hill and photographed from outside. The best views are from the road coming from Rožňava and from the mausoleum.

Getting there

Krásnohorské Podhradie is about ten minutes east of our guest house by car. Krásnohorská Cave is on the way but is also closed at the moment — check the current status before you set off.
