Caves near Rožňava

Rožňava sits in the middle of the Slovak Karst, the area with the highest concentration of show caves in Slovakia. Four of them are within a 45-minute drive of Ubytovanie KRAS and three are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. If caves are your thing, you can easily spend a long weekend here and go somewhere new every day.

Domica — an underground boat ride

The best known cave in the region and the only one in Slovakia where part of the tour is done by boat, on the underground river Styx. The cave continues across the Hungarian border as Baradla. It is about a 35-minute drive from us. The boat ride depends on the water level, so it is worth checking in advance.

Gombasecká Cave — soda straws

Famous for its thin hollow soda straws, which grow to more than three metres. The tour is short and easy, fine with younger children too. About 20 minutes from Rožňava.

Ochtinská Aragonite Cave — a world rarity

One of only three aragonite caves open to the public in the world. Instead of stalactites it grows white aragonite clusters and spirals that look like frost on glass. Small but unforgettable — about half an hour away via Štítnik.

Dobšiná Ice Cave — ice even in summer

One of the largest ice caves in Europe. Even in August it stays below freezing inside and the ice fill is over twenty metres thick, so bring a jacket and sturdy shoes. About 45 minutes from us. It has the shortest season of them all — usually open in the summer months only.

Krásnohorská Cave

The cave with the thickest stalagmite in the world is currently closed to the public. If you are planning to visit, check the current status first.

When the caves are open

Show caves are seasonal — most run from spring to autumn, the Dobšiná Ice Cave in summer only. Opening hours, admission and visitor limits are published by the Slovak Caves Administration at ssj.sk. In high season it is worth buying tickets in advance.
