History of HOTEL KRAS in Rožňava
For decades, Hotel Kras was one of the most important accommodation facilities in the town of Rožňava. It was located on Šafáriková Street, in the immediate vicinity of the historic center, and became a natural part of the social and tourist life of the Gemer region. Thanks to its location at the entrance to the Slovak Karst area, it provided a base for both domestic and foreign visitors, business travelers, and participants of cultural and social events.
The hotel was best known during the second half of the 20th century, when it was one of the main accommodation facilities in Rožňava. During the period of tourism development in the region, it served as a starting point for visits to the surrounding natural and historical landmarks, including Krásna Hôrka Castle, Betliar Manor House, and the caves of the Slovak Karst.
The hotel's significance was also recorded in the town's memory during the dramatic events of August 1968. According to historical accounts, the hotel building became the site of an incident during the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops, when Soviet soldiers fired shots in the vicinity of the hotel. This event remained part of the collective memory of Rožňava's residents and was later also examined in professional historical studies.
In later years, the hotel underwent modernization and offered accommodation for tourists, companies, and organized groups. It had a restaurant, social spaces, and dozens of rooms in various categories. Thanks to its location and capacity, it was a long-sought-after destination for visitors to the Gemer region.
Today, Hotel Kras remains part of the modern history of Rožňava, and in the memories of many residents it represents a symbol of urban hospitality, tourism, and social life in the second half of the 20th century.
The significance of the building today
In 2022, a new chapter began for this building. The KRAS building underwent several stages of reconstruction with the aim of creating a modern and functional space for the general public — entrepreneurs, local residents, and visitors to the town of Rožňava alike. Preserving the building's tradition was combined with its new use, reflecting the current needs of the town and region.
Today, the KRAS building is becoming a modern multi-purpose building that connects services, business, and accommodation under one roof. The ground floor and first floor house commercial spaces of various kinds — offices, services, and businesses for the everyday needs of residents. Hair salons, beauty services, a massage studio, a tailor shop, and a dental practice have all found their place here.
The building also includes "Ubytovanie KRAS" accommodation, located on the third floor with a capacity of approximately 40 beds. The accommodation is designed to provide a comfortable and pleasant base right in the center of Rožňava. It is used by individuals, couples, families with children, larger groups, and business clients alike.
The new use of the KRAS building builds on its long history while also bringing new momentum to the life of the town. The building, once a well-known hotel and an important social venue in Rožňava, today continues its tradition as a vibrant space for services, business, and hospitality.
