Hiking around Rožňava

Rožňava is wedged between two different worlds: to the south rise the limestone plateaus of the Slovak Karst, to the north the forested ridges of the Volovec Hills. For day hikes the location works well — leave in the morning, be back in your room in the evening.

The Slovak Karst plateaus

The Silica and Plešivec plateaus are vast limestone tablelands with abysses, sinkholes and dry grassland you will not find anywhere else in Slovakia. Walking is easy, but be warned — there is no water up on the plateaus, so carry your own.

Zádiel Gorge

The best known gorge in the Slovak Karst: a narrow valley with walls hundreds of metres high and the Sugar Loaf rock in the middle. The easy route along the valley floor is fine for children; a harder loop climbs up onto the plateau. About 40 minutes from us by car.

Volovec and the northern ridges

Volovec (1,284 m) is the highest peak of the Volovec Hills and on a clear day the view reaches as far as the High Tatras. It is a full-day, steep hike for the fitter walkers.

Slovak Paradise

Ladders, routes climbing through gorges and the Dobšiná Ice Cave on its edge — Slovak Paradise is about an hour away by car. It can be done in a day, but expect to come back tired.

Practical notes

Check-in is contactless, so you do not have to rush back by a set hour — you can return from a hike late in the evening. There is free parking by the building where your car can stay overnight.
